Herb Skolnick Community
By Dr. Bob Bookbinder

What had been an empty lot just a few short years ago is now the sit of the Herb Skolnick Community Center – the popular, thriving, and vibrant meeting place is available to Palm-Aire and their Pompano Beach neighbors. The Herb Skolnick Community Center, 800 S.W. 36th Ave in Pompano Beach, has just observed it’s 5th year anniversary.

It was due to the foresight, tireless efforts and diligence of the late City of Pompano Beach Commissioner Herb Skolnick that men, women and children of all ages who reside in this area of Pompano Beach now enjoy the very fine, functional and energy efficient facilities now available to them at the “Community Center.” The facilities at the Community Center include a lobby/reception/administrative area, an auditorium, a small kitchen and a meeting/classroom wing. The Center offers those who enjoy its facilities: programs; meeting opportunities; learning experiences; plus a variety of social, political, and special events.

Donna Lackey, Recreation Supervisor, with a staff of 3 full-time and 4 part-time personnel, efficiently and competently manages the Skolnick Center. It often functions seven (7) days of each week, particularly when its facilities are rented for weddings, church services, and other Sunday programs.

Participation and interest, by local and area residents in the “happenings’ at the Community Center, are enhanced by the reasonable costs and fees expected for membership and admittance to its special events. The Center also serves as a site for postings of related services and public announcements of the City of Pompano Beach.

The current offerings at the Skolnick Center include, but are not limited to: Scrabble, Scrabble & More Scrabble; Canasta Lessons; Mah Johgg; Duplicate Bridge; Ballroom Dance Classes; Adult Piano Lessons; Yoga; Understanding Your Computer; Spanish; Writing Workshops, Kids Karate; and Adult Karate.

The Jazzercise Program that began with six (6) participants now boasts 60 active members during season. The AARP Adult Drivers Safety Program is another of the popular and well-attended services that regularly appears at the Center. The Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) provides opportunities for residents with lung and breathing conditions information and support.

The 2009-2010 Special Events Calendar at the Skolnick Center includes performances of the: American Legion Symphonic Band; Curtain Call Playhouse; The Mummers; and Show at Skolnick.

For information concerning any of the programs offerings, admission fees, costs for attendance, performance dates and times are may wish to visit the Herb Skolnick Community Center, or call 954-786-4590. The Herb Skolnick Community Center also appears on the Pompano Beach website, www.mypompanobeach.org.
