As 2011 is upon us we are beginning to see the much anticipated new Chevy Volt coming to the market. I recently stopped by a dealer for information on the charging systems but they were not able to help me at that time. I was told that the car can be ordered now for future delivery. From what I have read you will be able to charge these cars on a regular 120 volt outlet which should take around 10 to 12 hours. To charge the car in four hours you will need a 40 amp 240 volt circuit installed. The cars will run on a full charge for forty miles and then a small gas engine will take over until you recharge.

Speaking of charging, many Cities are raising the minimum permit fee. We checked around and found that Ft. Lauderdale’s minimum fee is now $112.00. Lighthouse Point is $70.00 and Pompano is $55.00.

There is a recall of Siemens & Murray electrical products sold from June to August 2010. The circuit breakers run from 15 to 50 amp single and double pole. The electrical panels include most of the residential models. There was one meter/ main panel included in this recall.

These panels were sold at Home Depot, Lowe's, hardware stores and numerous electrical distributors across the nation. The circuit breakers have a defective spring clip that could break during normal use, causing the breaker to lose its potential to maintain a proper electrical connection. This could cause overheating and loss of power.

If you have had a new Siemens or Murray panel or circuit breakers installed from June through August of 2010 you should call your electrician for a replacement. You can also call (800) 756-6996 to talk to a representative or go to www.usa.siemens.com for more information.

Another recall is on Molenaar’s electroluminescent night lights. These lights can become hot to touch and melt, which could cause a fire hazard. The model numbers are 2019 and 2017. The 2019 model is shaped like a house and the 2017 model is square shaped with a rounded top. These lights glow green when plugged in. Most of these lights were promotional items called by many names. There were 315,000 of these units distributed between October 2001 and November 2009. If you would like more information on these lights go to www.miline.com.

Best wishes to all of you for a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year!
